S.W.O.T analysis

Project Summary - Creating a short film/documentary about myself and the understanding that I have of the progression routes I need to prepare for in the near future. I also need to note my aspirations for the future within this industry/field and how I will achieve them.

After completing the first year of the course, I’ve decided that once I finish the second year, I want to move on further and go to university. Wanting to widen my options, I have already researched a number of universities, not limiting myself to the UK either. Having looked at degree courses in VFX, 3D and 2D animation, I’ve decided that I want to do a BA that’s specifically for 2D animation.

Last year, I explored animation really for the first time, creating different pieces for projects and then settling on using animation for my FMP. Despite how tedious it can be, I really enjoyed the creative and free reign aspect of it, therefore want to carry it on even after this course and peruse a career in it too.  Other animators works have really inspired me too, including concepts of characters, rough AMVs, sketch based animations and mainstream cartoons as well.

As far as universities go, I’ve looked at a few closer to home as well as further away. Since I feel that there will be many opportunities open for me in a large city, the universities that I’ve looked at all offer courses in animation (3D, 2D and VFX) and are very centrally located, something that I want.

Strengths I have that will help me get into university:

Since I will have completed a 2 year college course in animation and VFX, I would have gained a substantial number of skills and knowledge that other people may not have achieved. I have learnt editing skills using Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere Pro. In my spare time, I have used a number of drawing and animating programs therefore have some experience in animating and drawing digitally too. Not only that, but I have also been drawing for a couple of years now, so have skill in that too.

Weaknesses that could potentially stop me:

Given my young age, I do not yet have that experience in the industry that some others may have if they are a couple of years older. Not only that, but the industry that want to get into is an extremely competitive one and some universities want specific things of potential talented students.

Opportunities that open by going to university:

For the animation and VFX industry, more and more people getting into it have degrees so if I do go to university, the                                             chances of me getting work placement after uni are high. Since I plan to go to university in a larger city, the                                                      opportunities that are around are significantly higher than what they’d be if I didn’t go to university first, or went                                             somewhere smaller where companies aren’t based.

Threats associated with what I want to do:

Within the animation industry, not only do you have to be highly skilled, but the universes are also mainly about the                                      potential students portfolio. They look for current skill, potential and a wide range of pieces such as drawings using                                          different mediums, animation examples and also grades from any previous courses or schooling.
